The Manorville Fire Department
Member Memorial
MEMORIAL HISTORY
The memorial project started in 2001 from a meeting at a local diner. Robert McCluskey, Joseph Tavella, James Waters and Rich Schmidt hand sketched a rough draft of a memorial on a napkin. Ideas of what the memorial should look like, how much space should it encompass and where to erect the memorial on the property was discussed. The concept was to build a memorial to fit in with the landscape of the property, include a walk way of bricks with deceased members name and badge number etched into the brick. The landscape design was donated by Owen Brothers in Wading River.
After several weeks of discussion with the fire department members and with the approval of the Manorville Fire District, clearing began on the South side of the building. The project was complete in 2002 with invitations to family of the deceased members since the inception of the department in 1941 and to set their loved one’s brick into the memorial walkway. This same dedication is done each year with current deceased members brick placed into the memorial.
The purpose of the memorial is to remember our brothers and sisters who have passed away. To remember just one small contribution of the individual’s kindness, smile or a lesson taught at training or a fire scene. The contributions from these members is the spirit that allowed this department to continue to complete the fire duties in which our community expects. This also allows us to realize that one person can make a difference when we work together to protect life and property. The bricks signify strength and an everlasting support for each other that shall never falter.
