On Friday, November 15, the Manorville Fire Department along with the North Babylon Fire Department responded upstate NY to assist with the Jennings Creek Wild Fire in Green wood Lake Area. 8 Members spent 3 days assisting with extinguishing spot fires and assisting with protecting houses along Edgemere Ave on Greenwood Lake in Warwick NY. Friday night we where assigned to work along Long Meadow Road to help with putting out any additional spot fire that kept popping up. The NYS Forest Rangers lit a back fire along Long Meadow Road to prevent the fire from Spreading. Crews lined up a long section of Long Meadow Road and just kept extinguishing the small firs that kept popping up. With the windy conditions, these fires kept re lighting themselves. The terrain was very rocky and very steep. On Saturday, we where sent to protect houses along Edgemere Ave on Greenwood Lake. The fire was slowly burning down the mountain side and threating houses along Edgemere Ave. Home owners of these houses where evacuated as precaution. Manorville and North Babylon, along with many other departments from NY all staged in front of houses and stretched lines to the rear of each house. At first we wet the back yards, the back of the houses and the roofs with water. The NYS Forest Rangers cut a fire line about 30 feet from the back of each house. All the fire crews extinguished the fire as it came to the fire line, preventing any fire from burning any of the houses. We operated at his location for about 14 hours. The crew from Manorville was on Sunday, November 17th to return back home. Some Additional Video links.. Here is a link to Google Maps of the Fire's Location |
